35.6.2 Ear-Specific Speech Discrimination

Aided speech discrimination was captured with a set of modified word lists provided by the SLP (see Table 35.5). These words were randomly presented at 50 dB HL utilizing monitored live speech in both an open set and closed set format. If Owen had not fatigued to task, then additional words would have been added and scores at 35 dB HL would have also been elicited. Testing was started with a closed set of 10 prompts for two-syllable words and 6 prompts for single-syllable words, utilizing objects in the office. For instance, when Owen heard “airplane,” he selected the airplane from the set of toys on the table. This was very effective. It is important to note here that the SLP had previously set a goal and worked extensively on developing Owen’s ability to take a risk and point to a target in a closed-set task. Once the closed-set task was completed, the test session was reconfigured for an open-set task. The objects were removed from the table and the room and testing was completed in an aided auditory only configuration with the benefit of visual/tactile cue.
